Overview

Hike the spectacular Twmpa (Lord Hereford's Knob) for epic views, then explore the famous, cozy bookshops of Hay-on-Wye!

From high-altitude vistas to quiet, dusty bookshelves. Join us for a stunning walk up to the Rhos Dirion trig point, where the horizon opens up across the Brecon Beacons. We’ll spend the morning walking the wild, undulating ridges before heading back down into Hay-on-Wye to explore its world-famous bookshops.

It’s the perfect blend of wild adventure and cozy vibes!

(Tea and cake is, as always, strictly optional but encouraged 😉).

Parking: Parking at Gospel Pass is very limited, so we will organise to meet in Hay-On-Wye prior to the event and car share up to the Car Park to ease congestion and parking worries!

Free parking at Gospel Pass - but we will utilise the parking in Hay-On-Wye prior to the walk (costs to be discussed in the chat)!

The walk will start promptly at 8.30am, so please be on time!

🥾 What to Expect

  • Duration: Approximately 4 hours / 5.2 miles/ 8.5Km

  • Terrain: Some hills, uneven paths, steps and small inclines – please wear suitable footwear - ascent of 336m

  • Pace: Suitable for all levels - we go at a pace that works for the whole group!

  • Level: Moderate - some short but steep hills, and inclines.

💼 What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking boots/shoes

  • Backpack for all your belongings

  • Water - I would recommend around 1L of water

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (raincoat/sunhat)

  • Any personal medication

  • Walking poles if you use them

  • Cash or Card for the Cafe and bookshops in Hay-On-Wye should you wish to purchase anything!

  • Some snacks for a Trig Point break (I usually bring a flask of tea and some food with me to enjoy the views!)

Spaces are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment!

ℹ️ Additional Information

  • There are NO Toilets at the start/finish location, but there are plenty of places for a "Wild Wee" which will be pointed out along the way should you need them! There are public (paid) toilets in Hay-On-Wye post walk.

  • Walks go ahead rain or shine unless extreme weather makes it unsafe (you will be notified in advance).

  • 18 years +

  • Well behaved, and stranger-safe dogs are welcome on leads, please bring poo bags! I will send an update if there appears to be livestock along the route nearer the time!

Join us for a chilled, low pressure walk to wach the sun set at The Cliffe!

Join us for an evening at The Cliffe, where ancient woodland trails open up to dramatic sandstone heights and a panoramic golden glow!

Roam & Reset is more than just a walk — it’s an opportunity to step away from the noise of the world and recharge amidst the stunning Shropshire landscape.

Ladies, come learn the basics of navigation and explore the world with confidence — just bring your curiosity!

The Offline Explorer - Navigation skills for beginners

Relying on apps to get you across the hills and moorland? Thought about being less reliant on the digital gadgets and learning the timeless art of traditional navigation but not sure where to start? Well, this is the session for you! A mixture or theory and practical, you will learn the fundamentals of navigation using a map and compass!

From interpreting contour lines to understanding the compass, this beginner-friendly session builds a rock-solid foundation for any adventurer!

📅 Date & Time

  • Date: Sunday 2nd August

  • Time: 10.30am – 4pm (approx.) Please arrive 10 minutes early so we can set off on time!

  • Structure: A day on the hills, using our surroundings to learn new skills - we will be outside all day, so please plan accordingly for changes in weather!

🗺️ What to Expect

This is a "learn-by-doing" day. We’ll break down the jargon and focus on the skills that actually matter when you’re out on the hills!

  • Maps & Scales

  • The "Language of the Land": Symbols & Grid References

  • The Secret of Contours: Visualising hills from flat paper.

  • Distance & Direction: using the compass and pacing concepts

  • Setting the map and identifying local landmarks.

  • Finding your pace.

  • Basic compass work: Taking an emergency bearing to get you home.

  • Terrain: We will head onto the Shropshire Hills, specifically the Stiperstones! Expect very uneven paths at times — perfect for seeing contour lines in action!

💼 What to Bring

  • Sturdy walking boots

  • Suitable clothing for hillwalking and the potential for weather changes (waterproofs and extra layers, a sunhat and a light layer to cover up if sunny)

  • Compass & Map - OS Explorer 217 (I have spares to lend if you don't own one yet!)

  • Lunch & Water: Bring a packed lunch, snacks, and at least 1L of water.

  • A Notebook & pen/pencil

ℹ️ Additional Information

  • Facilities: Toilets are available on arrival at the Visitor Centre (opening times tbc), after which we will find suitable "Wild Wee" Sections.

  • Weather: The hill session goes ahead rain or shine — that’s when the best learning happens! If we determine the weather to be out of the safety guidelines we have, we will postpone!

  • Age: 18+ only.

  • Dogs: As this is a skills-focused session, please leave four-legged friends at home for this one - sorry pups!
